"The reason “It Gets Better” caught on with politicians and celebrities is because it’s great PR and it requires absolutely NOTHING from them in the way of real action."

This is an effective criticism of politicians, but I can’t tell if it’s also criticizing of It Gets Better — I’d like to think it’s not. If it is, here’s my take—

It Gets Better wasn’t created to be used by politicians or by any public figures. Teens know that some famous, glamorous, rich, etc people are queer, but they might not know any queer adults in their own lives. It Gets Better is a chance for queer teens to hear from queer adults firsthand about what their lives are like.

Now of course, It Gets Better is not enough (it just occurred to me: has anyone actually ever tried to say that it is?). Hearing these stories doesn’t change minds or laws or anything else that should be changed. But for some people, It Gets Better is helpful. It is. -damascanradio
